State Police Investigate Lowell Connector Crash
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Joseph Crowley indicates that Gina M. Leone, age 19, of Worcester, was traveling on the Lowell Connector inbound in a 2005 GMC Yukon when she lost control of the vehicle causing it to crash into the bridge abutment in the median. The vehicle then traveled across all lanes and struck the right side guardrail.
The driver was transported by ambulance to Lowell General Hospital and then transferred to Mass General Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Her passenger, Walter J. Lawless, age 23, of Dunstable, was transported to Saint's Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (not the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section as previously indicated). No charges have been filed at this time. State Police Crime Scene Services, Lowell Police, Fire and EMS and Mass Highway all assisted at the scene.
The Lowell Connector inbound was closed for about 2 and ½ hours.
The identities of the victims are being withheld pending family notification.
