State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 9 East in Newton

Today at approximately 3:25 p.m. troopers assigned to the Brighton Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 9 East in front of the Chestnut Hill Mall in Newton that resulted in 3 serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Dwyer indicates that 60-year-old Han Mayli Kong of Newton was operating a 2008 Subaru Forester entering onto Route 9 East from a parking lot when her vehicle collided in the left travel lane with a 2001 Volkswagen sedan operated by 25-year-old Travis Lamp of Providence, Rhode Island. Following the collision, the Subaru crashed through the center guardrail, rolled over and came to rest on the westbound lanes. Kong suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Lamp suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and was transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. 25-year-old Craig Licchi of Quincy, the front seat passenger of the Volkswagen, was also seriously injured in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Newton Police and Fire Departments, and Masshighways assisted troopers at the scene.

During the crash investigation and vehicle removal Route 9 was restricted to one lane in each direction for approximately 2 hours.
