State Police Investigate Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Route 91 North in Northampton
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Dustin Fitch indicates that a vehicle was traveling north on Route 91 in Northampton between Exits 18 and 19 when the operator observed a pedestrian in the roadway. The operator was able to avoid striking the pedestrian by swerving to the side. However, another vehicle, a 2006 International tractor trailer unit being operated by 47 year-old Ernest Green of New Castle, Delaware, struck the pedestrian. A 1998 Ford Escort station wagon being operated by 17 year-old Cecilia Moquin of Northampton, MA also struck the pedestrian. The pedestrian, later identified as Miles Adams, age 18 of Northampton, MA sustained serious injuries and was transported to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he subsequently died. Green and Moquin were uninjured.
This crash, along with the circumstances surrounding Adams' presence in the roadway, remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the State Police Hampshire/Franklin Detective Unit. MassHighway assisted Troopers at the scene.
Due to the investigation Route 91 North was closed for approximately three hours, and traffic was diverted off Route 91 at Exit 18 onto Route 5.
