Massachusetts State Police Participate in Operation Safe Driver

On Monday, October 22, 2007 members of the Massachusetts State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section (CVES) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration will be participating in "OPERATION SAFE DRIVER". The Campaign is a nationwide, weeklong, enforcement and education blitz focusing on unsafe driving practices by both commercial and passenger vehicles. The goal of this program is to increase public awareness about truck blindspots, safe stopping, following distances, and increased seatbelt usage.

The CVES will be employing new Distance Between Car (DBC) LIDARS that possess a proven speed detection technology and a new algorithm that allows the detection of tailgaters. These devices will be employed in high crash corridors in order to reduce commercial vehicle crashes. As the DBC LIDARS are deployed the Massachusetts State Police becomes one of the first states in the Country, and the first state in New England, to utilize this advanced technology in an effort to reduce tailgating, which is a common causes of crashes and is a precursor to road rage.

Media Outlets that wish to profile this enforcement initiative or arrange for a demonstration of the new DBC LIDARS are asked to contact the Office of Media Relations.
