State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 2 in Phillipston

On Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 11:30 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Athol responded to a single vehicle crash that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Giuseppe Ciampa indicates that a 1999 Nissan Sentra sedan operated by 57 year-old Robert Rosser of Wendell, was traveling on Route 2 West, one-half mile west of Route 2A in Phillipston when his motor vehicle struck a moose. Rosser was transported to Gardner Hospital with minor injuries. A female passenger, 71 year-old Rosalie Rosser of Wendall, was transported to Athol Memorial Hospital and later pronounced deceased. Neither occupants were wearing safety belts.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Athol Fire and Rescue, Phillipston Fire and Rescue, Templeton Police Department and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.

During the crash investigation, Route 2 westbound at Route 2A was closed for approximately three hours. Traffic was diverted off at Route 2A.
