State Police Respond to Single-Vehicle Fatal Crash on Route 495 in Raynham
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brian Galvin indicates that a 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio on was traveling on Route 495 South when it traveled off of the roadway to the left, struck a highway sign, traveled back across all three travel lanes, rolled over and came to final rest in the breakdown lane. The vehicles two occupants, 22-year-old John W. Hetu of Pawtucket, RI and 19-year-old Abby M. Carnello of Middleboro, MA, were ejected from the vehicle. Hetu was declared deceased at the scene. Carnello was taken by ambulance with serious injuries to Morton Hospital and from there by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital. It has yet to be determined which occupant was operating the vehicle.
Though the crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, it appears that speed may have been a factor in the crash and it appears that neither occupant was wearing a safety belt.
The right travel lane and the middle travel lane of Route 495 South remained closed for approximately two and one half hours during the vehicle recovery and crash investigation.
The State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Massachusetts Highway Department, and Raynham Fire & Rescue assisted troopers at the scene.
