State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 93 in Stoneham

On Sunday, July 29, 2007 at approximately 2:20 a.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Medford Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 93 just North of exit # 34 in Stoneham that resulted in two fatalities and three serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Kerrigan indicates that A 2004 Honda SUV operated by 45 year-old Ashenafi K. Mckonnen of Cambridge crossed over the median from route 93 South bound to the north bound lane rolled over and collided with a 2004 Dodge sedan operated by 49 year-old Randall Howard of West Brook, Maine.

Mckonnen and a passenger in the 2004 Honda SUV, 37 year-old Abate Getnet of Cambridge, were pronounced deceased on the scene. A second passenger of the 2004 Honda SUV, Atikem Adissu age 27 also of Cambridge, was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. Howard and a passenger in the 2004 Dodge sedan, 42 year-old Lovanne Kachmer of Westbrook Maine were transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Stoneham Fire Department, Medford Fire Department, and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.

During the crash investigation and vehicle removal Route 93 North was completely closed for approximately 3 hours re-opening at 05:30 a.m.. During this time, traffic was diverted off at exit #34 onto Route 28. All three travel lanes of Route 93 South were also closed for approximately 3 hours. Traffic was diverted around the scene into the breakdown lane on Route 93 South.

The initial report of this incident included the involvement of a third motor vehicle the operator of which was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol. Further investigation shows that this was a separate incident and the third motor vehicle was in no way involved in this crash.
