On January 13, 2007, at about 10:25 p.m., State Police from the Dartmouth Barracks responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 195 East, east of exit 2, in Swansea.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Frank Ashley indicates that a 1997 Honda Accord was traveling on Route 195 East in the left travel lane when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to travel to the right and down the right side embankment before striking a tree and flipping over.

The driver, Kerguin Escobar, age 29 of New Bedford, who was unbelted at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. His male passenger, 47-year-old Faustino Valladares of New Bedford, was also unbelted at the time of the crash and was transported by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS). State Police Crime Scene Services and Swansea Police, Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.

The right travel lane on Route 195 East was closed for about an hour.
