State Police Investigate Route 495 Tewksbury Crash

On January 5, 2007, at about 10:00 p.m., State Police from the Andover Barracks responded to a three-vehicle crash on Route 495 South, north of Route 38, in Tewksbury.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Daniel Doiron indicates that a man was traveling on Route 495 South in a 1995 Toyota Avalon in the left travel lane when his vehicle struck a 1992 Ford Taurus that was operating in the middle travel lane. The driver of the Toyota then lost control of his vehicle, causing it to rear end a 1994 Ford F150 that was traveling in the right travel lane, before striking the right side guardrail.

The driver of the Toyota was transported by ambulance to Lahey Clinic for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Taurus, 49-year-old Gary Kagen of Nashua, NH, and the driver of the F150, 48-year-old Barry Pomeranz of Woburn, were both uninjured in the crash.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS), investigators believe the excessive speed on the part of the driver of the Toyota was a factor. No charges have been filed at this time. State Police Crime Scene Services, Tewksbury Fire and EMS and Mass Highway all assisted at the scene.

The two right travel lanes of Route 495 South were closed for about 30 minutes. The right travel lane remained closed for an additional 2 hours.

The identity of the driver of the Toyota is being withheld pending family notification.
