State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 128 North in Waltham

Today, at approximately 3:35 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Concord responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 128 North near Trapelo Road in Waltham that resulted in one serious injury and three minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Russell Phippen indicates that 20 year-old Jair M. Herbstman of Needham was operating a 2003 Acura sedan in the right lane of Route 128 South when he lost control of the Acura, driving across three lanes and into the median. Herbstman then crossed through the median and into the left lane of Route 128 North, striking a 1997 Subaru station wagon operated by 19 year-old Ian D. Lyons of Charlotte, Vermont head-on. Herbstman was taken by ambulance with minor injuries to Lahey Clinic in Burlington. Lyons and his front seat passenger, 19 year-old Kyle C. Rosenblad of Shelburne, Vermont, were taken by ambulance to Newton Wellesley Hospital. A passenger in the rear seat of the Subaru, 20 year-old Nicholas Cacio of Lisbon, NH was taken by ambulance with serious injuries to Lahey Clinic.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Waltham Fire Department, Lexington EMS and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the crash investigation and vehicle recovery, the left two lanes of Route 128 North were closed for approximately 3 hours.
