Serious Crash and Road Closure, Route 95SB by Westwood Rest Area
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Paul Brancato indicates that 41 year-old Lina Gomes of Randolph, was operating a black 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier on Route 95 South between East Street and University Avenue when her vehicle collided with a 2005 Toyota operated by 47 year-old Manuel A. Santos of East Providence RI. The Chevrolet became disabled in the high speed lane. Gomes exited her vehicle and walked across to the Toyota which was disabled in the breakdown lane, to have conversation with Santos. Gomes was returning to the Chevrolet when she was struck in the middle travel lane by a 2002 Saturn being operated by 32 year-old Mikel Parent of Falmouth. Gomes was airlifted by Med-Flight helicopter with serious injuries to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section, Westwood Police Department, Westwood Fire Department and Masshighways assisted Troopers at the scene.
Route 95 was closed on both the north and south bound lanes for approximately 20 minutes during the medical evacuation. The southbound lanes remained closed approximately 3 hours during the crash investigation and traffic was detoured around the crash scene at the East Street Exit.
