State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 125 in Wilmington

On Friday, August 24, 2007 at approximately 9:14 p.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to a two-vehicle crash at the top of the off-ramp from Route 93 North to Route 125 in Wilmington that resulted in one serious injury.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew LaVita indicates that 25 year-old Joseph Picanso of Wilmington was operating a 2000 Buick Century sedan approaching the top of the off-ramp from Route 93 North to Route 125 in Wilmington when the vehicle entered into the Eastbound lane of Route 125 and crashed into the passenger side rear of a 2006 Freightliner tractor trailer unit that was traveling East on Route 125 passing the off-ramp from Route 93 North. After the crash, the Buick was dragged by the Freightliner approximately 50 feet to the East. Picanso sustained serious injuries during the crash and was transported by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center. The operator of the Freightliner, 29 year-old Toneil Lacorick of Springfield, Missouri was not injured in the crash.

Although this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, it appears that speed was a factor in the crash. The Wilmington Fire Department, Wilmington Police Department and Masshighways assisted troopers at the scene.

During the investigation and vehicle removal, the ramp from Route 93 North to Route 125 North was closed for approximately 45 minutes and the Eastbound lane of Route 125 was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours. Traffic was diverted into the Westbound lane of Route 125 where one lane of traffic in both directions was able to get by.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not contact the barracks directly.
