Yesterday, at approximately 10:10 p.m., the female operator of a motor vehicle reported by cell phone that shots were fired at her vehicle on Mt. Vernon Street at South Broadway Street in Lawrence by the operator of a 1997 Blue Ford Explorer. The caller then reported following the vehicle onto Route 495 South in Lawrence and later onto Route 93 South. Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Andover responded to Route 93 South to look for the Ford.
Sergeant Dennis Bertulli observed the Ford on Route 93 South in Wilmington and attempted to stop the vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop and Sergeant Bertulli followed the vehicle as it exited Route 93 at Exit 38 onto Route 129 West in Wilmington. The Ford stopped on its own in a parking lot on Route 129 at West Street and the operator was arrested without incident. During the investigation, State Police recovered a firearm.
The operator of the Ford, Rodney Harper, age 41, of Lawrence, was transported to the State Police Barracks in Andover where he was booked. Harper was later taken to the Essex County Correctional Facility in Middleton pending arraignment in Lawrence District Court on the following charges:
- Carrying a Firearm without a License
- Carrying a Firearm with Ammunition
- Attempted Murder
- Failure to Stop for Police
- Operating a Motor Vehicle After License Revocation
