State Police Investigate Route 6 Fatal Crash

Today, at about 3:15 p.m., State Police from the Yarmouth Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash at the bottom of the Exit 7 ramp from Route 6 West to Willow Street in Yarmouth.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Popovics indicates that a 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe had taken the Exit 7 ramp from Route 6 West, had stopped at the end of the ramp and had begun to turn left onto Willow Street when it struck a Honda Elite Motor Scooter which was traveling northbound on Willow Street.

David A. Kalinowski, a 67-year-old male from Hyannis, was operating the Motor Scooter, and was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Kalinowski was knocked from his vehicle and was transported by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

The operator of the Hyundai, Hopeton A. Lee, age 43, of Chatham, and his passenger, Maureen Williams age 41, of Chatham, who were both wearing safety belts at the time of the crash, were both uninjured in the crash.

Mr. Lee was issued a summons for the following:

  • Motor Vehicle Homicide
  • Operating to Endanger and
  • Failure to Use Care in Starting/Turning

The Yarmouth Fire Department and Yarmouth Police Department troopers assisted at the scene.
