State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 8 Cheshire

Yesterday August 14, 2008, at approximately 10:05 p.m. troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Cheshire responded to a one-vehicle crash involving a bicyclist on Route 8 near Ingalls Road, in Cheshire, that resulted in the death of the bicyclist.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael J. Kleiner indicates that an adult female was operating a 2005 Subaru Impreza on Route 8 northbound when the bicyclist was struck. The operator of the Subaru struck the bicyclist, causing fatally injuries. The Subaru was operated by a 59-year-old Karen Dettman from Cheshire, Massachusetts, who was not injured in the crash. The bicyclist who was fatally injured was a 49-year-old Valerie E Senger from Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Cheshire Police Department, the Lanesboro Police Department, the Cheshire Fire Department and the Adams Ambulance and Adams Police Department, Medical Examiner Office assisted Troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation the two lanes of Route 8 were closed for approximately 3 hours and traffic was diverted around the crash scene..
