State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 128 in Wakefield

On Monday, May 26, 2008 at approximately 7:30 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Danvers responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 128 North prior to Route 129 (exit 40) in Wakefield that resulted in one serious injury and two minor injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Daniel Carideo indicates that 26-year-old Jennifer Delaney-Carceo of Cambridge was operating a 1997 Toyota Corolla sedan in the left lane of Route 128 North in Wakefield when her vehicle cut across the middle lane and entered the right lane where it collided with the driver's side front of a 2001 Audi A6 operated by 49-year-old Robert Cecere of Lynnfield. After the collision, both vehicles rolled over and came to rest against the guardrail off the right side of the road. The adult male passenger of the Toyota, 55-year-old Michael Gainus, was wearing his safety belt but sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by medical helicopter to Boston Medical Center. Delaney-Carceo, who was wearing her safety belt, sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Leahy Clinic in Burlington. Cecere, who was also wearing his safety belt, suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to the Leahy Clinic in Burlington.

As a result of the investigation, the State Police has issued a summons to Delaney-Carceo, charging her with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor - Causing Serious Injury; Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle; Operating a Motor Vehicle After Suspension; Operating a Motor Vehicle without Authority; Speeding and Marked Lanes Violation.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Wakefield Fire Department, Wakefield Police Department, Lynnfield Police Department and MassHighway assisted troopers at the scene.

In order to ensure a safe landing zone for the medical helicopter, all lanes of Route 128 North and South were closed for approximately 20 minutes. Additionally, due to the investigation and vehicle removal, the right and middle travel lanes of Route 128 North remained closed for an additional hour. Traffic was diverted around the scene in the left lane of Route 128 North.
