State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 25 East in Wareham

Yesterday at approximately 11:12 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Bourne responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 25 East prior to the rest area in Wareham that resulted in two serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Heather Smolinski indicates that 44 year-old Anne Ferreira of Raynham, was operating a 1996 Toyota Camry sedan westbound in the eastbound center lane of Route 25 in Wareham when her vehicle collided head-on with a 1997 Buick LeSabre sedan operated by 65 year-old David McGowan of New Bedford. McGowan suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by medical helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Ferreirra was transported by ambulance to Tobey Hospital in Wareham with serious injuries. It is unknown if either operator was wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash.

This crash is being investigated with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Ferreirra is being summonsed for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The Wareham Police Department, Wareham Fire Department, Wareham EMS and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.

In order to provide a safe landing zone for the medical helicopter, Route 25 East was completely closed for approximately 30 minutes. Additionally, due to the crash investigation and vehicle removal, all three travel lanes of Route 25 East were closed for an additional 2 hours. During this time, traffic was diverted around the crash scene in the breakdown lane.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
