State Police Investigate Fatal Crash in the Sumner Tunnel in Boston

Yesterday, at approximately 11:54 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Ted Williams Tunnel Barracks responded to a single vehicle crash in the Sumner Tunnel in Boston that resulted in a fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Brian Garrant indicates that a 25-year-old Brian P. Bartlett of Hanover was operating a 1998 Mercedes sedan in the Sumner Tunnel southbound when he exited on the Storrow Drive off-ramp at a high rate of speed, striking the left wall on the ramp. As a result of the crash, Bartlett was ejected and sustained serious injuries. He was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene . There were also three passengers in the Mercedes, 25 year-old Matthew Shea of Randolph, 25 year-old Douglas Newcomb of Randolph and 27 year-old Christopher Ray of Canton. The three passengers were all taken to Mass. General Hospital with minor injuries.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Also, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, the Boston Fire Department and H & H Ambulance assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation and the vehicle recovery the ramp to Storrow Drive was closed for approximately 3 hours.
