State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 93 South in Woburn

Today, at approximately 6:39 a.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Andover Barracks responded to a multiple vehicle crash on Route 93 South, south of Commerce Way in Woburn that resulted in four serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper James Foley indicates that a 1997 Land Rover SUV was broken down in the left lane and median of Route 93 South in Woburn when a 2007 Honda sedan operated by 49-year-old Sarah Buck of Andover swerved to avoid the Land Rover striking the left guardrail. Subsequently, a 2000 Saab sedan operated by 62-year-old James G. Rice of Norwich, VT also swerved to avoid the Land Rover and struck the left guardrail. Later a 2004 Ford Ranger pick-up truck operated by 35-year-old Michael J. Mulligan of Methuen also operating on Route 93 South swerved to avoid the crash scene and struck the Honda sedan on the side of the roadway. As a result of the Honda being struck by the Ford, the Honda crashed into the Saab. After the Saab came to rest, the front seat passenger, 55 year-old Deborah Miller of Norwich, VT exited the vehicle and was struck by the Honda and the Saab after the Honda's collision with the Ford.

As a result of the multiple crashes, Miller was taken with serious injuries to Massachusetts General Hospital by MedFlight helicopter. Buck was taken by ambulance to Leahy Clinic with serious injuries and her passenger in the Honda, 23 year-old Allison Couillard of Dracut was taken to Winchester Hospital with serious injuries. Mulligan was taken by ambulance with serious injuries to Leahy Clinic. The Land Rover was not struck during the crash and its operator was uninjured in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Middlesex County District Attorney's Office, Reading EMS & Fire and MedFlight ambulance assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation and the vehicle removal Route 93 South was closed for approximately 1 ½ hours.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
