State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 16 Medford
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Martin J. Cooke indicates that a 58 year old male from Arlington was driving a 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass west on Route 16. The Cutlass struck the guardrail on the right five times then the left guardrail of the westbound lane once. It then collided with a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu operated by 70 year old Joseph Bentley from Winchester who was merging from Main Street on the right. Bentley was not injured. The Cutlass continued over the curb on the right and rolled over down the embankment and came to rest on its wheels against the trees. The operator who was the sole occupant of the Cutlass was transported to Lawrence Memorial Hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced deceased. The victim's name is being withheld pending proper family notification.
This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Medford Police and Fire Departments assisted Troopers at the scene.
The on scene investigation took just over an hour with only intermittent stops in traffic. No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
