State Police Investigate Double Fatal Crash on Route 1 North in Revere

On Thursday, August 6, 2009, at approximately 11:17 a.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Revere responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 North in Revere, on the elevated portion of roadway above Copeland Circle, which resulted in two fatalities and three serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Donald Brown indicates that a 19-year-old woman from East Weymouth was operating a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero SUV in the right lane of Route 1 North in Revere, when she lost control of her vehicle while on the elevated portion of Route 1 over Copeland Circle in Revere. After losing control, the Mitsubishi rolled over, struck the guardrail on the right side of the road, veered across all lanes and impacted the concrete median barrier before coming to rest on its wheels across the left travel lane.

The rear driver's side passenger, a 16-year-old girl from Hull, was wearing her safety belt, but suffered serious injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The rear center seat passenger, a 17-year-old male from Ipswich, was not wearing his safety belt and was pronounced deceased at the scene. State Police consider crash victims age 17 and under to be juveniles and do not release their identities.

The driver - who at 19 years old is considered an adult under the law but who is not being identified at this time pending completion of family notifications - was wearing her safety belt, sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Massachusetts General Hospital. The front seat passenger, a 17-year-old boy from Weymouth, was wearing his safety belt and was transported with serious injuries to Massachusetts General Hospital. A 17-year-old boy from New Hampshire, who was seated in the rear passenger seat of the Mitsubishi, was also wearing his safety belt and was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries.

Due to the crash investigation and vehicle removal, Route 1 North was completely closed at Copeland Circle for approximately 2½ hours. During this time, traffic was diverted off of Route 1 North into Copeland Circle, where the traffic was routed around the circle and back onto Route 1 North. The left lane was opened to travel at approximately 2:00 p.m., with the right lane remaining closed for an additional 45 minutes until the entire road was reopened at approximately 2:45 p.m.

The facts and circumstance of the crash remain under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The Revere Fire Department assisted Troopers at the scene.
