State Police provide Ice Safety Tips and Demonstrations at Quabbin Reservoir

On Thursday, February 12, 2009 at 1:00 p.m., the Massachusetts State Police will demonstrate the inherent dangers of thin ice and lifesaving steps that one should take if involved in an ice emergency. This press event will be held at the Quabbin Reservoir, Winsor Dam. Enter via middle entrance and follow to Boat Cove.

At the event, State Police Officers assigned to the Underwater Recovery Unit will provide the public with safety tips and demonstrate simulated recoveries. Demonstrations will include an ice penetration dive, and surface rescue. DCR personnel and Ware Fire Department will demonstrate use of a safety sled. Some of the safety tips that will be incorporated in the presentation include: the importance of ice safety equipment; ensuring proper ice thickness; and the dangers of ice while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
