State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 195 East in Fairhaven
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Richard Enos indicates that a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe operated by 52-year-old Charles Jones from Charlestown, R.I., was traveling on Route 195 West in the breakdown lane when the vehicle struck a sign. The vehicle then crossed all lanes and entered the center median strip. The vehicle continued westbound and then re-entered the roadway heading west on the eastbound side of the highway, where the Chevrolet then struck a 2007 Toyota Corolla ,operated by 73-year-old Frederick Campbell from Bristol, R.I., head on. Frederick Campbell suffered serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. 72-year-old Alma Campbell, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was transported to St Luke's Hospital in New Bedford with serious injuries. Charles Jones was transported to St Luke's Hospital with minor injuries.
This crash remains under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The Fairhaven Fire Department and the Massachusetts Highway Department assisted troopers at the scene.
Due to the crash investigation and vehicle removal the break down lane and the lane adjacent to it was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours.
