State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 495 North in Marlboro

On Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at approximately 3:40 p.m. Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Leominster responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 495 North, near Route 20 (exit 24) in Marlboro that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Timothy Foley indicates that a 1999 Ford Ranger operated by 46 year-old Stuart Baird of Yarmouth was traveling on Route 495 North in the second travel lane from the right when he attempted to pass a 2004 Nissan Altima operated by 21 year-old Jorge Santiago of Hudson and struck it in the left rear. Both vehicles lost control and exited the roadway onto the center median. Baird was partially ejected and sustained fatal injuries. He was declared deceased at the scene. Santiago was uninjured.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Marlboro Fire, Marlboro Police, the Medical Examiners Office and MassHighway assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the crash investigation and vehicle removal Route 495 northbound was limited to two travel lanes for approximately three hours.
