State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 93 South in Dorchester

On Friday, March 6, 2009, at approximately 2:33 a.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in South Boston responded to a serious five-vehicle crash on Route 93 South, south of Columbia Road in Dorchester, that resulted in three serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Joseph McLaughlin indicates that the five-vehicle crash involved a 1998 Subaru Outback Station Wagon, a 2000 Toyota Camry sedan, a 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier sedan, a 2009 Toyota Corolla sedan and a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer sedan.

The Chevrolet Cavalier, operated by 27-year-old George R. Aufderheide of Quincy, was traveling in the right travel lane on Route 93 South when the vehicle lost control and struck the median before coming to rest in the left travel lane. Aufderheide exited his vehicle when it came to rest. The Subaru Outback, operated by 31-year-old Matthew L. Trainor of Quincy, stopped to assist. The Toyota Camry, operated by 25-year-old Henry C. Wang of Quincy, attempted to avoid the crash scene and subsequently struck the Chevrolet Cavalier, causing it to strike Aufderheide as he stood outside the vehicle. The Mitsubishi Lancer, operated by 42-year-old Winfrey Darick of Somersworth, N.H., also tried to avoid the crash scene and subsequently struck the Chevrolet Cavalier and Aufderheide.

Aufderheide suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash. Two passengers in the Chevrolet Cavalier, 29-year-old Tim Lujan of West Reddy, Conn., and 22-year-old Regina Soccorso Reardon of Quincy, were also injured. All three were transported by ambulance to Boston Medical Center.

A 2009 Toyota Corolla operated by 21-year-old Zhipeng Zhu of Quincy was struck during the crash. The facts and circumstances of the crash, including the sequence of events, remain under investigation.

All lanes of Route 93 South were closed at Columbia Road for approximately 2 ½ hours for the crash investigation and vehicle removal. Traffic was detoured around the crash scene during this road closure.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Boston Fire Department, Boston EMS and MassHighways assisted Troopers on scene.
