State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route One North in Peadbody

Today at approximately 1:30 a.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Danvers responded to a single-vehicle crash in the median on the ramp from Route One north to Route 128 north and south in Peabody. The crash resulted in one fatality, and one serious injury.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew Sheehan indicates that 22-year-old Corey Nason from Sanford, Maine was operating a 2005 Saturn Ion on the ramp complex when he lost control of the vehicle resulting in the vehicle rolling over several times and coming to rest in the median. His only passenger, 21-year-old Ryan Smith from Amesbury, was ejected and pronounced deceased at the scene. Nason was trapped in the vehicle and had to be freed by fire personnel. He was then transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. The driver was wearing a seat belt and the passenger was not.

The facts and circumstances of this crash remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police, with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Medical Examiners Office. The Lynnfield Fire Department and the DOT assisted troopers at the scene.

During the crash investigation the ramp from Route 1 North was closed for approximately 2 ½ hours.
