State Police Investigate Serious Crash on Route 140 in New Bedford
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Stephen P. Fortin indicates that the red 2005 Chevy Avalanche was traveling in the left lane on Route 140 north, when the truck veered off of the road to the left, across the center median, across all three southbound travel lanes, rolled over and came to rest inside the wood line on the southbound side of the highway near Exit 5.
The driver, Alfonso F. Pinto, 60, of Seekonk, was ejected and found trapped under his vehicle. He was freed by mechanical means by responding emergency personnel. Mr. Pinto was transported by ambulance to Saint Luke's Hospital in New Bedford. He was later transferred to Beth Israel Hospital in Boston.
The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police, with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section.
The New Bedford police and fire departments and the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation also assisted at the scene. The scene was cleared at 7:25 a.m.
