State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 91 in Longmeadow

On Friday March 26, 2010 at approximately 9:56 a.m., troopers from the State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to calls of a two-car crash on route 91 southbound in Longmeadow which has resulted in one fatal injury and serious injuries to three other victims.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Christopher Keyes indicates that 34-year-old Tracy Gomez from North Adams was operating a 2000 Hyundai Sonata in the far right lane when she made a left turn in an apparent attempt to utilize the median turn-around at the .8 mile marker. Her driver's side door was struck by a 1996 GMC Jimmy being operated by 69-year-old Karl Johnson Sr. from West Suffield, Ct. that was traveling in the far left lane adjacent to the median.

GOMEZ was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding EMS personnel. Her passenger, 66-year-old Stephen Bowen from Springfield, was extricated from her vehicle and subsequently transported to Baystate Hospital in Springfield with serious injuries. The passenger of the Jimmy has been identified as 50-year-old Karl Johnson Jr. from West Suffield, Ct. The operator and passenger of the Jimmy were both transported to Baystate Hospital with serious injuries as well.

The left and middle travel lanes were closed for approximately two hours during the crash investigation.


The facts and circumstances of this crash remain under investigation by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and troopers from the Hampden County District Attorney's office.

Troopers were additionally assisted at the scene by the Longmeadow Fire Department, AMR ambulance service, and the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation
