Fredrickson Jr., 46, of Billerica, was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Impala on the southbound side of Route 3 when the car crossed the median and entered the northbound side of the roadway, north of Exit 26. According to the preliminary investigation, the Impala then struck a 2008 Nissan Frontier pickup truck

The driver of the Impala was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Frontier's driver, Glen P. McAlpin Jr., 39, of Lexington, was transported by ambulance to Lahey Clinic in Burlington with serious injuries.

The facts and circumstances of the crash, including a definitive sequence of events, remain under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Bedford Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's Highway Division assisted troopers at the scene.

All northbound lanes of Route 3 were closed for approximately two hours to accommodate the rescue response and crash investigation.
