State Police Investigate One Car Crash with One Fatality on Route 495 in Amesbury

Today at 3:42 p.m., Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Newbury responded to reports of a one-car crash into the median near exit 54 on Route 495 southbound in Amesbury.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper George Katsarakes indicates that a 2002 Saturn sedan was traveling south in the right lane and attempted to exit the highway at exit 54. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a sign, and rolled into the median area between the ramp and the southbound lanes.

None of the occupants were wearing seatbelts and witnesses indicate that two of the occupants were ejected when the vehicle rolled over. The 17 year-old female operator, who was ejected, was transported to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport where she was pronounced deceased by the ER staff. The other two occupants, a 17 year-old female, who was also ejected, and 20 year-old Chantay O'Brien from Freemont NH, sustained serious injuries and were also transported to Anna Jaques Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation by Troop A of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Troopers were additionally assisted at the scene by the Amesbury Fire Department and The Mass Department of Transportation, Highway Division.

The State Police will not be releasing the identities of the two 17 year-old females involved in this crash.
