Dec 29: State Police Investigate Fatal Crash in Marion
Last night at 8:44 p.m., troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Bourne responded to reports of a two-car motor vehicle crash on Route 195 westbound in Marion that resulted in a fatality. The deceased victim was in or next to a disabled motor vehicle, which was partially in the travel lane when it was struck by a passing car.
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Paul Doyle indicates that a 1999 Chevrolet Monte Carlo operated by Edward Widor, 69, of Ludlow, and carrying two passengers was disabled a half-mile east of Exit 20, facing westbound, partially in the right travel lane and partially in the breakdown lane. The investigation indicates that there were no rear-facing lights activated on the disabled car, and the driver’s door was open.
At that time, State and Marion police had received calls reporting the disabled car being in a hazardous location and were en route to that location to assist. Simultaneously, a 69-year-old Acushnet man was operating a 2004 Subaru Forester station wagon westbound on that stretch of road. The right front of the Subaru struck the left side and left door of the disabled Chevrolet, the evidence suggests. The crash occurred while cruisers were en route to the disabled car.
Evidence suggests Mr. Widor was either standing alongside his disabled car or was sitting in it with his legs outside the vehicle when impact occurred. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two passengers in the Chevrolet, a 56-year-old Ludlow woman and a 33-year-old Sagamore woman, suffered minor injuries and were transported by ambulance to Tobey Hospital in Wareham. The driver of the Subaru was also transported for minor injuries.
Investigation indicates that the roadway and lane markings at the site of the crash were in excellent condition and the area was extremely dark.
No charges have been filed at this point. We are not releasing the Subaru driver’s name as he faces no charges at this time.
The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop D of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Marion Fire Department and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation’s Highway Division also assisted at the scene. The right travel lane was closed for a period of time to accommodate the rescue response and crash investigation.
No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
