Apr 28: State Police Respond to Fatal Crash in Hancock

Last night at approximately 8:09 p.m. troopers from the State Police
Barracks in Cheshire responded to calls for a motor vehicle crash with
serious injuries on Brodie Mountain Road in the town of Hancock.

Upon arrival troopers found a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado operated by a New York man had crashed into a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado and the trailer it was pulling.

Preliminary reports by Trooper Noah Pack of the Cheshire Barracks
indicate that Michael Derrick, 24, of Stephentown, N.Y., was
traveling westbound on Brodie Mountain Road when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed into the other oncoming vehicle. Derrick’s 2005 Silverado sustained heavy damage from the impact and caught fire after coming to rest on the side of the road. The two occupants of the other vehicle were able to help extinguish the flames with the assistance from other witnesses to the crash.

EMTs from Village Ambulance responded to the scene where they pronounced Mr. Derrick deceased. The occupants of the 2008 Silverado were transported
to North Adams Regional Hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash has yet to be determined but speed is being
considered a factor. The crash is being investigated by Troop B of the Massachusetts State Police with assistance from the State Police
Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and the Berkshire County State Police Detective Unit. State Police were assisted at the scene by Hancock Fire and Rescue.

We have no further information at this time. Please do not call the
barracks directly.
