Jun 02: State Police Assist Environmental Police with Black Bear near Mass Pike in Newton

Today at 6:30 a.m. Troopers from the State Police barracks in Weston responded to the area of mile marker 126 on the Mass Pike westbound in Newton to assist the Environmental Police and Newton Police Department. A Black Bear was spotted in a tree in this area which is adjacent to Washington St in Newton.  These efforts were unsuccessful and for public safety reasons the bear was shot and died.  

At 7:27 a.m. Troopers stopped all westbound traffic on the Mass Pike in this area while the Environmental Police neutralized  the threat to public safety posed by the bear. The total time traffic was stopped on the Mass Pike was approximately 2 minutes.  

At approximate 7:50 a.m. The Environmental Police removed the bear the scene.
The Massachusetts State Police served in a support role in this matter. For any case specific inquiries relative to the steps taken to capture the bear, please contact the Environmental Police.
