Duty Status Finding

Upon completion of a duty status hearing held this morning at Massachusetts State Police General Headquarters in Framingham, the department ordered Trooper John Basler suspended without pay indefinitely. Additionally, the department’s Internal Affairs Section will open an investigation into Basler’s conduct to determine if he violated departmental rules and policies.

The duty status hearing was scheduled after the Plymouth Police Department notified State Police late last week that they intend to charge Basler with operating under the influence and related charges in connection with a motor vehicle crash in that town. Both occupants of the other vehicle involved in the crash were killed in that incident. The crash reconstruction by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section is ongoing; when complete, the reconstruction findings will be presented to the Plymouth Police Department and the Plymouth District Attorney’s Office, who will determine if additional criminal charges are warranted. Plymouth Police are the agency of jurisdiction because the crash occurred on a municipal road.

Basler, who was injured in the crash, did not attend this morning’s hearing but was represented by counsel.

State Police will have no further comment at this time.
