State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 24 in Avon

the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Milton responded to a report of a motor vehicle stopped, and possibly disabled, on Route 24 southbound near Route 27 in the town of Avon.

Upon arrival, troopers discovered that a 2007 Dodge Caravan had collided with a 2006 Jeep Liberty on the northbound side of Route 24. Preliminary investigation, by Trooper Paul Chastenay indicates that the Caravan was travelling northbound in the middle lane when it came up on the Jeep Liberty stopped in the middle travel lane without its lights on. The operator of the Caravan, identified as Robert Stockwell, 25, of Middleborough, attempted to avoid the disabled vehicle but crashed into the rear of the Jeep. Upon impact the Jeep rotated in a clockwise direction coming to rest in a southerly direction in the breakdown lane.  The Caravan veered off the roadway into the median and hit a guardrail.

The driver of the Jeep, a woman from Brockton whose name is not being release at this time, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Brockton, where she was pronounced deceased. Mr. Stockwell was transported to Boston Medical Center for non- life threatening injuries.

The facts and circumstances of the crash are currently under investigation by troopers from the State Police Barracks in Milton.  Troopers assigned to the Collision Analysis Reconstruction Section, Crime Scene Services Section, Avon Fire Department, Stoughton Fire Department, and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation assisted at this scene.
