On Friday, June 24, 2011, 19 student officers of Special State Police Officer #23 graduated from the State Police Academy. Over 600 hours of curriculum, derived from a partnership with the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, was delivered to the recruits over the course of 15 weeks of intensive training. The program mirrors the Municipal Police Training Committee's approved curriculum for municipal officers, and the program also meets the requirements of the MPTCs Intermittent Reserve Academy. Subject matter experts representing the campus community, along with the State Police, delivered the curriculum to these recruits in subjects such as Applied Patrol Procedures, Criminal Law, and the Clery Act, to name a few.
The State Police's Certification Unit oversees the training, licensing and qualifications of over 1800 Special State Police officers within the Commonwealth. Special State Police officers derive their police powers from the Colonel, and the State Police Academy is the only academy to teach this program. Graduates of SSPO #23 represent diverse private and public institutions from all corners of the Commonwealth, including Boston University Medical Center, Holy Cross Campus Police and the Cambridge Health Alliance. These graduates are prepared to serve their agencies and have been given the skills and knowledge to perform their jobs professionally and safely. Congratulations to members of SSPO #23 and welcome to the law enforcement community.
