At press conferences held at the State Police Barracks in South Boston and at the State Police Air Wing headquarters at Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, State Police and Marine Corps commanders noted that there is a great need for assistance for area families this holiday season.
"As was the case last year as well, the demand for toys this year has increased," said Colonel Marian J. McGovern, superintendent of the Massachusetts State Police. "Once again, difficult economic conditions have left many families in need of help this holiday season.
"More than ever, in this, the season of giving, we need your help. Your assistance can make holiday joy possible for a child who otherwise would go without. Every girl and boy deserves a toy. Please help us make that difference in their lives."
According to United States Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Brian Neil, this is the 63rd year in which the Marine Corps has led the Toys for Tots Program. The Massachusetts State Police have partnered with the Marines in this state for the last 26 years.
Donors are asked to give new, unwrapped toys with non-violent themes, designed for either boys or girls, ages newborn to 18. As in years past, toys can be dropped off at any State Police Barracks through Friday, Dec. 17. Those looking for more information or who wish to make a monetary donation may visit the program's website at www.toysfortots.org.
