Speed is a significant contributing factor to fatal crashes in Massachusetts. According to 2000 statistics, one-third of all Massachusetts' fatal crashes involved a speeding driver.

Speedwatch is a community-based speed management program that is currently under evaluation by the Massachusetts Traffic Safety Research Program (MassSAFE), a joint program of the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security's Highway Safety Division (EOPSS-HSD) and the University of Massachusetts - Amherst.
