The 80th Recruit Training Troop (80th RTT) began 21 weeks of training on October 17, 2011. Trainees will receive over 1000 hours of the latest police training in more than 50 different topic areas. Core topics comprise almost 70 % of the training hours and include: Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Motor Vehicle Law, Patrol Procedures, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Highway Safety, Driver Training, First Responder/CPR, and Physical Training. The program is very physically and mentally demanding. Trainees live at the Academy during the week and start their day at 5:30 a.m. and train until 8:30 p.m. Currently, there are 208 trainees in the program. Trainees are currently involved in scenario training where they demonstrate their understanding of the core topics while engaged in role-playing scenarios. In scenario training, trainees will have to participate in 75 realistic scenarios and satisfactorily apply the knowledge and training they have received. The 80th RTT will graduate on March 9, 2012, and the new Troopers will then begin 3 months of field training with experienced Troopers, which they must also satisfactorily complete. Only after that will they be permitted to patrol on their own.
