The SSPO Academy is a rigorous 16 week program similar in design to the paramilitary training provided to Troopers. In addition, these candidates completed a rigorous curriculum consistent with police training programs that are conducted throughout the State with the exception of motor vehicle law and firearms qualification. Core courses include criminal law and procedure, defensive tactics, first responder and community policing. Additional courses covered terrorism, crime scene, emergency driving and water safety just to mention a few.
Of the original 26 candidates, only 19 successfully completed the training. The graduation ceremony was held on July 17th, 2008. Eight of these graduates will proceed to post graduate firearms training and qualification over the next couple of weeks. Those officers who are employed by State Colleges or Universities will be provided the opportunity to receive post graduate training in motor vehicle law in the future as well.
