The Plymouth Police Academy opened in 1985 and now operates out of the new Plymouth County Public Safety Administration Building, which opened July 1, 2002. This academy serves approximately 120 municipal police departments in Southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket. Hours of operation are 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday for Basic Recruit training. It is a full academy, consisting of Basic Recruit training and Reserve Intermittent courses, with weekly in-service classes running from September through June each year for veteran police officers.
This police academy has three classrooms with 50 seats each and an information technology room with 32 computer stations. Staff of this academy meet with the Southeast Chiefs of Police Training Advisory Board annually to decide the in-service and specialized course offerings for this location. This group is also instrumental in the development of the both the Chiefs' and the Southeast Command in-service programs, which focus on training specific to the needs of that police population. While basic reserve training is offered at this location, reserve in-service programs are offered at the Yarmouth Police Department, the Whitman Town Hall, and the Abington High School for the convenience of this academy's constituency.
The Plymouth Regional Police Academy offers the following training :
- Recruit Officer Training
- Veteran Officer In-Service
- Reserve Recruit/Reserve In-Service
The hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact the academy staff with all academy-related questions.
