Station B-3, SP Springfield, built in 1987 to replace the Monson barracks, is located at 600 Liberty Street off Exit 3, Interstate 291 in the heart of the Springfield Metropolitan Area. A primary responsibility of SP Springfield is providing safety and security on 70 miles of the Interstate Highway System (I-91, I-291, I-391) and State Route 57. There are 9 cities and large towns within the Station area including the City of Springfield, the third largest in the Commonwealth. SP Springfield readily assists the municipal police departments of these cities and towns when needed. SP Springfield also supports the Westover Air Reserve Base with policing services and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation with patrols of the Massachusetts State Park and Forest Systems. Popular local attractions include Six Flags New England, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the Eastern States Exposition, the Springfield Armory, and Bright Nights. There are several colleges and universities including Springfield College, Western New England University, American International College, Bay Path University, and Springfield Technical Community College. Bradley International Airport in neighboring Connecticut services Hartford, Connecticut and Springfield, Massachusetts. All of this contributes to very high traffic volume and a constant demand for SP Springfield services.
