The Massachusetts State Police Certification Unit, an office under the direction of the Division of Standards and Training, is multi faceted. A main function of the Unit is to perform Background Investigations and process applicants for Private Detective, Watch Guard Patrol and Special State Police Appointments. Aside from the Background investigations, it is the responsibility of the Unit Commander and his designees to maintain the Employee Evaluation System (EES) and process and record all Awards recommendations.

This Unit is tasked with conducting eight different types of Background Investigations, three of which are relative to public licenses. They are Recruit Training Candidates, Department of State Police Civilian Employees, Private Detectives, Watch Guard Patrol Agency, Special State Police, Department of State Police Interns, Temporary Employees and In and Out-of-State Backgrounds requested from outside agencies.
