The Commissioner is responsible for an agency comprised of 18 correctional facilities housing over 11,000+ inmates, an operating budget of over 520 million dollars and 5,200 employees, (approx. 4,000 of whom are correction officers). The Commissioner's direct reports consist of nine Executive Staff members: Deputy Commissioner of the Prison Division, Deputy Commissioner of the Administrative Services Division, Deputy Commissioner of Classification, Programs and Reentry Division, General Counsel, Director of Outreach and Engagement, Director of Legislative Affairs, Director of Administrative Resolution, Director of Policy Development and Compliance Unit, Executive Director of Strategic Planning and Research and the Executive Assistant. In addition to two support staff who report directly to the Executive Assistant to the Commissioner.
The Commissioner, working with executive staff determines the direction for administrators and employees as they work to accomplish the Department's mission. Standardization of policies and procedures to ensure consistency and prudent management of Department resources is managed through the Office of the Commissioner.
Since the Department of Correction is part of the public safety and security secretariat, the staff of the Commissioner's Office communicates regularly with the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, members of the State Legislature, other law enforcement agencies, media and external stakeholders. Additionally, the staff of the Commissioner's office responds to inquiries from both inside and outside the Department concerning correctional issues.
