The mission of the Special Operations Command Group is to provide the Department with a rapid response force in the event of a major situation within its jurisdiction and to provide emergency assistance to any Law Enforcement Agency within the Commonwealth, as directed by the Commissioner. The Special Operations Division is comprised of the following units:
Special Operations Command Group
Special Operations Command Group is responsible for overseeing and controls the members of the Special Operations Response Units, which consist of the TRT, SRT, K9, Hostage Negotiation Team and High Risk Transportation Team.
Special Operations Response Units
Tactical Response Team (TRT)
The Tactical Response Team is responsible for riot control and group demonstrations as well as prisoner escorts, institutional searches, prisoner escape (grid searches) and missing person searches
Special Reaction Team (SRT)
Special Reaction Team is responsible for all weapons applications in support of the TRT or other law enforcement agencies. This would include all less-lethal specialty impact munitions, chemical agent, and lethal firearm applications.
The department's K9 unit under the jurisdiction of the Special Operations Division is responsible for crowd control, prisoner escape & drug searches.
Hostage Negotiations Team (HNT)
The department's HRT unit under the jurisdiction of the Special Operations Division is responsible for all hostage type situations and negotiations
High Risk Transportation (HRT)
The department's HRT unit under the jurisdiction of the Special Operations Division and the Central Transportation Unit are responsible for the transportation of level 1 inmates.
In addition the following responsibilities also fall under the Special Operations Division
The Radio Communications Coordinator is assigned to this unit and is responsible for the purchasing and application of all areas with regards radios, including repairs, licensing, etc.
The division is responsible for the department's firearm qualification; staff are qualified inside the department's mobile firing range. The mobile range travels to all institutions within the department on a yearly basis. Members of the SRT conduct all qualifications
Chemical Agent/ Special Munitions
The division is responsible for the department's chemical agent and special munition qualification; members of the SRT conduct All qualifications
Honor Guard Unit
The Special Operations Division oversees the department's Guard unit. This unit attends the funeral services of all law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and any funeral service for any department officer current or retired at the request of the family. This unit also attends opening ceremonies and special events as directed by the Commissioner.
The division is responsible for the purchasing and testing of all security equipment for the department. In addition members current sit on contract committees as well as the New England Technologies Committee.
