An offense code is a number the Research and Planning Division assigns to an offense based on the chapter and section of the crime. If a date is provided, this is when the offense was added into the offense code table. The offenses are grouped together by type: Violent Offense, Sex Offense, Property Offense, Drug Offense and Other Offenses. Offense types are further grouped within these 5 general categories to best report the statistics on the multitude of criminal statutes committed by the thousands of individuals incarcerated in prison.
