Investigators Probe Fatal Accident Involving Beverly Police Officer
State Police Detectives assigned to the Essex District Attorney's Office and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section are investigating a fatal accident involving an on-duty Beverly police officer that took place at about 9:20 this morning in front of 361 Cabot Street.
Beverly Police Officer Stuart Merry, 40, was driving southbound on Cabot Street in his 2006 Ford Crown Victoria when his vehicle swerved to the left over the double yellow line and struck a parked Toyota Camry, killing a woman inside the vehicle. She was the owner of the car, and its lone occupant.
Police are withholding the victim's identity pending notification of the next of kin. She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Medical Examiner.
Officer Merry was transported to Beverly Hospital, and is expected to survive.
At this stage of the investigation it is unclear was caused the accident.
