Registered Sex Offender Sentenced To 20-25 Years On Rape And Assault Charges

Newburyport Superior Court Judge Richard Welch this afternoon sentenced Cornelius Moore, 52, of Lynn, to 20-25 years in state prison, after a jury found him guilty of aggravated rape, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

The jury deliberated for three hours before returning its verdict against Moore yesterday afternoon, following the week long trial.

Essex Assistant District Attorney Greg Friedholm proved that on August 18, 2008, the defendant attacked a woman with a sword in his Lynn apartment. Using the weapon like a baseball bat, he struck her several times over the head, and then raped her. The woman was an acquaintance of Moore's.

After the rape, the woman fled to a nearby restaurant/bar and reported the attack. Moore was arrested a short time later by Lynn Police.

Moore is a registered sex offender, having previously been convicted of indecent assault and battery. Prosecutor Friedholm told the court that Moore also had numerous convictions involving violence on his criminal record.

Friedholm commended investigators from the Lynn Police Department for their excellent work on this case, and credited Victim/Witness Advocate Theresa Gay, who assisted the victim through the court process.

Moore was represented by Attorney Rebecca Whitehill from the Committee for Public Counsel Services.
