Former Newburyport Police Officer Indicted For Perjury

An Essex County Grand Jury today indicted former Newburyport Police Officer Daniel McCarthy, charging him with perjury. He is expected to be arraigned in Salem Superior Court within the next few weeks.

Newburyport Marshal Thomas Howard had placed McCarthy, 50, of Newburyport, on paid administrative leave in May. McCarthy resigned from the police force on July 19.

McCarthy is alleged to have committed perjury in the Newburyport District Court on May 23 of this year.

The maximum penalty for perjury is 20 years in state prison.

The case will be prosecuted by Essex Assistant District Attorney James Gubitose. McCarthy is represented by the law firm of Hanley and Fitzsimmons.

The District Attorney's Office will not comment beyond this press release prior to McCarthy's arraignment.
