For Immediate Release - July 25, 2012

After meeting today with federal, state and local law enforcement authorities, District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett issued the following statement regarding the July 22, 2012 police-involved shooting.

“On July 22, 2012, in connection with a joint federal, state, and local investigation, the investigative team received reliable information that Mr. Payne and others in two vehicles were in the process of initiating an armed home invasion.  Acting on this information, members of the Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit and the Lynn Police Department acted swiftly to prevent this potentially deadly home invasion by attempting to stop the vehicles.  At this point, Mr. Payne accelerated in reverse and rammed into a police vehicle and continued to ram the vehicle.  Officers fired at his vehicle. Mr. Payne was struck twice.  He was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston where he later died.  As Mr. Payne’s associates were taken into custody, police recovered a loaded .357 revolver from Mr. Payne’s vehicle, together with a loaded pistol grip shot-gun and a loaded 9 mm handgun from the other vehicle.

No further information will be released or comment made until the completion of our investigation into the justifiability of the shooting, at which time, we will release a complete report to the public.”
